Interview with Birth Photographer and Certified Birth and Postpartum Doula

Interview with Ash Lowe from Wild Womb Photography: Birth Photographer and Certified Birth and Postpartum Doula

As expecting parents, we often find ourselves reading about labor and delivery, nervous about what to expect, unsure how to sift through the abundance of information out there. One way to understand pregnancy, labor, birth, postpartum and to make sure your voice is heard is to speak with a doula.

To get a clearer understanding of these topics, we sat down with Ash Lowe, an experienced and certified birth and postpartum doula and birth photographer, with a focus on being the voice for the mother during the hard and messy times.

About Ash Lowe, Birth Photographer and Certified Birth and Postpartum Doula

Ash Lowe is a birth photographer and Certified Birth and Postpartum Doula based in Traverse City, Michigan. With a deep passion for empowering mothers, Ash is dedicated to ensuring that women feel confident, supported, and proud throughout their pregnancy, labor, birth, and postpartum experiences. As an integral part of the local community, she has created meetup groups to foster connection and support for mothers at every stage of their journey through motherhood.

What inspired you to become a birth photographer and a doula?

Ash: My own birth experiences really lit the spark for me. I thought I was prepared, I had done all the research, but once labor started, it was like my brain hit a reset button. I wished I had someone there to guide and support me and my partner through it all. Those moments, combined with my passion for helping others, made me realize I wanted to be that person for other families. Birth photography came naturally alongside that, it’s such an honor to capture the raw, emotional, and life-changing moments of birth. Every family’s story is unique, and I love documenting it.

Can you tell us about your journey and training to become a doula?

Ash: After my own births, I felt called to support other parents, so I became certified as a birth and postpartum doula. I’ve also pursued additional training, including becoming a certified breastfeeding educator and childbirth educator. I’ve taken courses on essential oils for birth, HIPAA compliance, and even young parent support. I believe in continuing education to provide the best support, so I’m always learning and growing.

What is the most rewarding part of your work?

Ash: The “I did it” moment. The look of pride and empowerment on a parent’s face after their baby is born. It’s incredible to witness someone realize how strong and capable they are. Being part of such a life-changing moment in their lives is something I never take for granted.

How would you describe what a doula does? What’s the difference between a doula and a midwife?

Ash: A doula is there for emotional, physical, and informational support. I’m like a guide and cheerleader through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. A midwife, on the other hand, provides medical care, things like catching the baby and monitoring the health of the birthing person and baby. I focus on comfort measures, advocating for your wishes, and helping you feel confident in your choices.

How do you personalize your care for each family’s unique needs?

Ash: I start by getting to know my clients, their preferences, fears, and what makes them feel safe. Every family is different, so I tailor my support to fit their goals, whether it’s providing hands-on comfort measures during labor or just being a calm, reassuring presence. I also use evidence-based information to educate them on their options so they feel empowered to make decisions.

What are some common concerns or fears you hear from parents, and how do you address them?

Ash: Fear of the unknown is a big one, how labor will go, whether they’ll be able to handle the pain, or if they’ll make the “right” choices. I remind parents that there’s no one-size-fits-all birth and help them prepare as much as possible while encouraging flexibility. I also reassure them that they’re not alone, I’ll be there every step of the way.

Are there a few pieces of advice you can give families to help prepare for childbirth?

Ash: Definitely! Practice positions and movements that can help during labor, learn about the stages of labor so you know what to expect, and build a solid support team. Also, remember that rest, hydration, and self-compassion are key. And don’t hesitate to take a childbirth education class, it’s a game-changer!

What are some of the challenges you’ve encountered in your work?

Ash: Balancing the unpredictability of birth with family life can be tricky. Babies come on their own schedules, and I want to be fully present for each client. It’s also challenging to see families face unexpected complications, but it’s a reminder of how important a good support team is in those moments.

Can you share a memorable experience that highlights the impact of a doula’s support?

Ash: I once supported a family during a VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean). They had a lot of anxiety after their first birth experience, but with preparation, encouragement, and a great medical team, they achieved the birth they hoped for. Seeing their joy and pride after that birth was unforgettable. The mom fully advocated for her birth, she was a rockstar!

What misconceptions about doulas do you often encounter?

Ash: A big one is that we’re only for people planning unmedicated births or home births. That’s not true! I support all kinds of births, whether you want an epidural, a scheduled cesarean, or anything in between. Another misconception is that doulas replace partners. My goal is to support both the birthing person and their partner so they feel confident and connected.

How can families decide if hiring a doula is right for them?

Ash: If you want extra support, information, and someone in your corner during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum, a doula can be a great fit. I recommend meeting with a few doulas to find someone you connect with. It’s all about feeling comfortable and supported.

What tips do you have for first-time parents as they approach labor and delivery?

Ash: Trust your instincts and your body, you were made for this. Surround yourself with a supportive team and focus on what makes you feel safe and calm. Also, don’t be afraid to ask questions or speak up about your preferences. You’ve got this!

How has being a doula changed your perspective on childbirth and parenting?

Ash: It’s deepened my appreciation for how unique every journey is. Birth is raw, powerful, and unique to every family, and parenting is the ultimate exercise in love and patience. It’s a privilege to witness and support families as they step into these new chapters.
