Favorite Toys to Encourage Sitting

Sitting is a major milestone and one many parents want their babies to leap toward as soon as possible. It’s so much fun to watch your baby interact with the world differently! It takes time for your little one to move through all the necessary steps to get there though.

Wondering what those steps are and how to help your baby succeed? Check out our tips on sitting progression.

There are a few things that can make that progression easier on you both, and we’ve spent some time narrowing down what products we believe will best serve you and your little babe.

  1. Boppy Pillow

This pillow has so many uses, which is one reason why it’s so popular. You know it. You see it everywhere. And there’s a reason for that. When your baby is a newborn, it might be helpful for positioning if you’re breastfeeding. It also can help your baby practice supported sitting! The cushion provides safe support while still allowing your baby to strengthen her trunk muscles. It will wrap nicely around her body while encouraging her to use her own strength to stay upright.

  2. Black-and-White Photos or Soft Books

These can be extra stimulating--and thus extra motivating--to your babe during sitting sessions, just as they are during tummy time practice. It will encourage your little one to stay engaged and raise his head and trunk while sitting. It’s so important to keep these sessions fun, interesting, and productive, and the contrast of these pictures and books will do just that.

  3. Sassy Teethe & Twirl Sensation Station

This toy is teething-friendly, so you can let your baby chew on it all she wants--and we know how much our babies love to put things in their mouths! It also has a suction cup end that can attach to a wood floor, refrigerator, or high chair. We found this toy is extra motivating for little ones and very useful in encouraging arm extension and engaged play. It is also an excellent toy to use when transitioning in and out of sitting, which you and your baby will get to soon!

  4. Fat Brain Squigz

These toys are innovative, fun, and useful for so many developmental stages. Squigz have little suction cup ends that can stick together or to a surface. When using them for sitting, place the toys in front of the baby to keep them engaged and interested! They may even get excited enough to reach for them, working on their balance and moving them into the next stage of sitting.

There are a lot of products and toys out there that will help your baby learn to sit, but the important thing is that they’re safe, engaged, and working on strengthening those muscles. You can use the products we’ve suggested or find other toys and items around the house that excite your baby. The key is to move through the developmental progression and have fun together!
