Postpartum Must-Haves: Thoughtfully Chosen Essentials for Recovery & Feeding

The postpartum season is beautiful, exhausting, healing, and often full of unexpected learning curves. After two deliveries and navigating recovery, feeding, and the early newborn days, these are the products I personally reached for and genuinely found helpful. I hope that this list offers a little comfort, practical support, and reassurance as you prepare for your own postpartum journey.

Postpartum Recovery Essentials (Vaginal Birth)

I was very grateful when I found this product. An instant cooling spray that is gentle and natural to spray anywhere and everywhere.

A simple, gentle way to support healing and comfort during postpartum recovery. These pads provide soothing relief and are highly effective at reducing swelling, cooling, and easing soreness—especially if you have stitches or tears.

Postpartum Recovery Essentials (C-Section Birth)

While I didn’t have a C-section with my boys, if I had, I would have reached for Earth Mama’s Scar and Skin Balm. As a PT, I know how important it is to keep scars — and the surrounding tissue — moist, mobile, and feeling good.

As a physical therapist, one of the most important parts of C-section recovery is gradual return to movement—gentle walking, posture awareness, and avoiding prolonged pressure or strain on the incision area in early healing.

If You’re Planning to Pump and/or Nurse

Whether you plan to nurse, pump, combination feed, or are simply keeping your options open, having a few supportive products on hand can make the postpartum transition feel a little smoother. Feeding journeys rarely go exactly as planned, but these are a few products I personally found helpful and reached for often.

Gentle, natural, and soothing, this nipple cream was one of my postpartum staples. Whether you’re nursing or pumping, a little extra support for sensitive skin can go a long way during those early feeding days.

If you’re pumping regularly, a hands-free bra is a game-changer. This one made it easier to multitask, stay comfortable, and reclaim at least a little freedom while pumping. A strapless pumping bra lets you put it on without fully taking other things off, and it really does hold it all!

Simple, reliable, and easy to store, these bags helped make milk storage feel organized and manageable. They freeze flat and held up well through our pumping journey. These hold up, they seal, they don’t leak.

Comfort matters postpartum, and these became everyday favorites. Supportive without feeling restrictive, they worked well for both nursing and daily wear.

Soft, comfortable, and easy to throw on during those early postpartum weeks. These were perfect for lounging, nighttime feeds, and days when comfort was the priority.

Comfortable, reusable, and surprisingly essential during the early postpartum months. These helped manage leaking while being gentler on sensitive skin and easier to reuse throughout the day.

If you’re planning to pump, this is the pump I recommend. I am not someone who can be plugged into a wall multiple times a day, and when I had a toddler and a newborn, I was exclusively pumping, and I needed to be able to move while I pumped. The BabyBuddha is small, portable, and battery-operated, yet surprisingly powerful and effective. I loved that it worked with my Medela and Spectra parts and could even fit into my spandex pocket—making pumping feel far less tethered and much more manageable.

Simple and surprisingly useful, the Haakaa made it easy to collect letdown during nursing without extra pumping effort. It was an easy way to save milk that might otherwise be lost and became a helpful tool during our feeding journey.

Whether nursing, bottle-feeding, or simply needing extra support, the Boppy is a staple in many homes. It can make feeding positions more comfortable and supportive while also saving mom’s arms and back during longer feeding sessions. I didn’t use a Boppy feeding, because I’m relatively short and had large babies, and it just didn’t fit in my lap logistically. I did, however, use a Boppy pillow later for safe sitting play time.

Postpartum recovery and feeding journeys are deeply personal, and no two experiences look exactly alike. While thoughtful products can certainly make this season feel a little more manageable, they are simply tools — not the measure of your success as a parent. Give yourself grace, accept support when offered, and remember that healing, feeding, and adjusting to life with a new baby is a process. I hope these products help you feel a little more comfortable, supported, and cared for along the way.
